Arte Povera

Recently I have been focusing on exploring sexual assault through catharsis and I've been interested in experimenting with embroidery and fabrics and portraying messages that can be interpreted in multiple ways. I sewed into a condom breaking the protection and sewed messages onto old photographs. I used clothes that were used as criminal evidence in a sexual assault case, and a lot of newspaper. Through research I found that during crime scenes for rape, any clothing or items that could contain criminal evidence will be destroyed if it is wrapped in plastic, as the plastic makes bacteria multiply and makes the DNA unreadable - you are encouraged to wrap anything that contains the perpetrators DNA in newspaper. I started brainstorming ways in which I could spread this information as I know it isn’t something that is well known. This work was exhibited in West Lothian in November 2022 for 16-Days-Of-Action, raising awareness for gender based violence.
